ShopsWired as a WordPress Alternative: Your Whole Website for $29/mo
Yes — ShopsWired can run a complete business website, not just an online store. Starter is $29/mo and includes hosting, your custom domain with SSL, edge caching, a drag-and-drop page builder, content pages, menus, SEO controls and every theme and plugin in the marketplace. WordPress freelancers commonly charge $50–$150 a month for maintenance alone, often with hosting billed on top.
A shop is just the most demanding kind of website. Here is what you get, what it costs next to a typical WordPress setup, and where WordPress is still the better choice.
What a business website actually needs
Most business sites need the same handful of things, and ShopsWired covers each of them natively, on every plan:
- A visual page builder. Compose pages from rows, columns and blocks with drag-and-drop — headings, text, rich text, raw HTML, images, buttons, live product grids and blocks contributed by plugins. The homepage is built the same way, with an optional announcement bar above the nav. (We walk through it in our page builder guide.)
- Content pages. Create About, Services, Contact and policy pages, served at
/page/your-slugand linked into your navigation. Clone a page to build a family of pages that share one layout. - Menus. Build and reorder header, footer and account menus, including nested dropdowns.
- SEO handled for you. Automatic titles, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, Open Graph and Twitter cards, structured data, a sitemap, and per-page SEO fields that decide what search engines show and whether a page is listed. Images are resized and converted to WebP on the fly.
- A built-in customer inbox. Your site gets its own message address; replies and enquiries land in Messages with a full history per contact, so you are not wiring up a separate mail plugin.
- Full design control. Pick from ready-made themes, set your logo and eight brand colours, or open the built-in file editor and change any theme file. You can also inject your own HTML, CSS or JavaScript into the head or body — for an analytics tag or a chat widget — without touching the theme.
- Your domain, secured. A custom domain and SSL are included on every plan, and public pages are served from a global cache close to the visitor.
Not selling anything? Turn the shop off
A brochure site, a portfolio or a showroom doesn’t need a cart. Catalog / browse-only mode hides Add to Cart and/or prices store-wide, so you can present products or services as a catalogue and take enquiries instead of orders. If you start selling later, you switch it back on — nothing to migrate, no new platform to learn.
Plugins: the part WordPress users will recognise
The reason people stay on WordPress is plugins. ShopsWired works the same way. The built-in marketplace lists themes and plugins with their readme, versions and pricing; free ones install in a click, and paid ones can be a one-time purchase, a monthly subscription or a tiered plan. You activate, deactivate, update and roll back versions from your dashboard, and each plugin brings its own settings page. Starter can install any theme or plugin in the marketplace.
Plenty of what you would reach for on WordPress already exists as a plugin here. ShopsWired’s own Blog plugin adds posts with their own SEO fields and storefront pages; a Page & Redirect plugin handles extra pages and redirects; there are plugins for analytics, reviews, wishlists and marketing email.
Build anything: custom plugins from Pro
This is where ShopsWired goes past a website builder. Pro is $99/mo, and it unlocks writing your own plugins in ShopScript, ShopsWired’s server-side JavaScript runtime, with the CLI for local development. A custom plugin can:
- Add whole new sections to your site. A plugin can register its own pages and URLs — a
/eventslisting, a member directory, a booking request form — render them inside your theme, set their title, social card and canonical link, and add them to your sitemap. - Store its own data. Custom records give a plugin real data models — listings, applications, testimonials, appointments — with fields, unique values, filtered queries and an admin screen to manage them.
- Run on a schedule. Scheduled jobs and background tasks handle imports, reminders and syncs; heavy jobs such as PDF generation or image processing can run as pay-as-you-go container jobs billed by the second.
- Talk to anything. Call outside APIs, receive webhooks on a public route, and add dashboard widgets so your team works from one admin.
Think WordPress custom post types, shortcodes and cron rolled together. The full reference is in the developer docs, and build your first plugin walks through one end to end.
What it costs: ShopsWired vs. a typical WordPress site
WordPress itself is free software, and that is a real advantage. But a running WordPress site has three bills: hosting, premium themes and plugins, and someone to keep it updated and working. Published figures, checked in November 2026:
| Option | Typical monthly cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress.com Business / Commerce | $40 / $70 billed monthly ($25 / $45 billed yearly) | Hosted WordPress; maintenance of your own plugins and content is still yours |
| Managed WordPress hosting (entry tier) | Roughly $30–$35 for one site | The server; your plugins, theme and content are still yours to maintain |
| Freelancer care plan | Commonly $50–$150, hosting often extra | Updates, backups, monitoring; extra work often billed hourly |
| Agency care plan | From a few hundred dollars upward | More hours, testing and a dedicated contact |
| ShopsWired Starter | $29 ($1/mo for the first 3 months) | Hosting, domain & SSL, edge caching, page builder, SEO, inbox, every marketplace theme and plugin |

The point is not that a care plan is bad value; a good developer earns their fee. It is that much of what a WordPress care plan pays for — patching the server, updating core, keeping caching and SSL working — is simply not your job on a fully managed platform. Marketplace plugins still get updates, but you apply them from the dashboard and can switch back to the previous version if one misbehaves.
If you take payments, ShopsWired adds 0% platform transaction fees on every plan; you pay only your payment processor’s standard rate. Pricing is per shop, and the full breakdown is on the pricing page.
For WordPress developers and agencies
If you build sites for clients, you don’t lose the work — you lose the server babysitting. Billing accounts can be split per client (“Client ABC”), the partner program pays you a share of plans your referred clients run, and as a partner you can install private plugins and themes you built onto the stores you manage without listing them publicly. You can also sell plugins and themes to every ShopsWired merchant through the marketplace.
Where WordPress is still the better fit
Be honest with yourself about these before you switch:
- A publishing-first site. If your site is mainly a large blog or magazine with many authors and editorial workflows, WordPress was built for exactly that. Blogging on ShopsWired comes from a plugin, not the core platform.
- A specific WordPress plugin you depend on. WordPress’s plugin directory is enormous. If your business runs on one particular plugin, check that ShopsWired has an equivalent, or plan to build one on Pro.
- A bare root domain. Custom domains on ShopsWired use a subdomain such as
www.example.com; root domains likeexample.comaren’t supported yet. - Custom code on Starter. Starter installs and configures plugins and lets you edit your theme fully. Writing your own plugins starts on Pro, which is $99/mo.
The bottom line
If your website is a business — a few key pages, enquiries, good SEO, maybe products now or later — ShopsWired gives you all of it on one managed platform for $29/mo, with no server to keep alive and room to grow into custom plugins when you need them. New sites can start on Starter or Pro at $1/mo for the first 3 months, then continue at the plan’s standard price. Browse sites already running on ShopsWired to see what that looks like.
